Teen drug abuse is a growing problem, with new drugs becoming available and increasing the danger every year. With all of the well known risks and new substances, adolescent drug treatment programs are in growing demand for troubled teens from the ages 13-17. When choosing from the many qualified adolescent treatment programs available, we advise parents to determine which program will meet the specific needs of their child. For parents to make an accurate decision, they will need to pay very close attention to the signs that point towards drug abuse in young teens.

Common Signs of Drug Abuse in Troubled Teens

Changes in mood or attitudes
Unusual temper outbursts
Changes in sleeping habits
Changes in hobbies or other interests
Signs of depression, withdrawal
Carelessness or irresponsible behavior
Unusual hostility toward family members
Losing friends
Poor academic or vocational performance
Losing interest and lacking motivation
Changes in friends
Negative changes in Schoolwork, missing school, or declining grades
Increased secrecy about possessions or activities
Use of incense in conversations with friends, more secretive, using "codes" language
Change in clothing choices: new fascination with clothes that highlight drug use
Increase in borrowing money
Evidence of drug paraphernalia such as pipes, rolling papers, etc.
Bottles of eye drops, which may be used to mask bloodshot eyes or dilated pupils
New use of mouthwash or breath mints to cover up the smell of alcohol
Missing prescription drugs – especially narcotics and mood stabilizers
