Boot Camps for Troubled Teens
Boot camps work on the methodology that “If you scream enough at children they will become disciplined.” Boot camps are modeled after military science endeavors, utilizing military boot camp exercises, and intense physical training. Boot camps for troubled teens focus on discipline, respect, and responsibility for the military unit. Boot camps are about discipline, obeying the authority, total submission to commanders, and using respectful verbiage such as “Yes, Sir!”, “No, Sir!”.
Do boot camps for troubled teens work? Some do, and some don’t. Moreover, certain personalities don’t do well under the behavioral modification approach. Some teens complete the boot camp and do quite well, especially when they leave the boot camp and enter into another highly disciplined structured environment. Other teens, kids who are soft and sensitive teens, don’t do well in boot camps. In fact, soft sensitive boys and girls can shut down under the intense intimidation techniques used by boot camp staff. These kids, upon completion of the boot camp for troubled teens can become angrier, shut off from adult caregiver, mistrusting, and worse than ever before.
Parents look at boot camps as an option for their troubled teenager because they have been around forever, and some have received national attention through television documentaries.
