Way too many emerging adults who are struggling with the transition to adulthood don't want to go on to college, or seem unable to find or keep even menial, minimum-wage work, just hanging out with other struggling young adults. If you have a struggling young adult who is failing to launch call one of our Family Advocates and find out what your options are... there are many, and there are answers.  Call 866-439-8112 today, and start the process of helping your struggling young adult to launch.

Some struggling young adults, both men and women, are isolating from the world while others are partying like there is no tomorrow.  Plain and simple, they are failing to launch.  Some of these young adults should be emerging adults with great promise and tremendous potential, yet they are caught between teenhood and adulthood, going no where, spinning their wheels.

Depression, substance abuse, drug addiction, and mental health issues are bogging them down. Parents we speak to describe a young adult who is spending most of their time playing computer games, or always on Facebook.. Parents are paralyzed to help, not knowing what to do to to help break their young adult our of the downward spiral. Most parents tell us that they feel powerless to deal with these troubled "adult" children. Unfortunately, if something is not done even the most skilled professionals can't help troubled young adults who are alienated, isolated, and emotionally distraught.

While most of the young adults we have worked with did well in high school, and they were able to start college, they were unable to maintain their academic pursuits due to poor choices (drinking, partying, and focused on friends and having a good time and emotional.  At one point the party is over and they fail academically, come home with their tail between their legs, and then the real problems emerge. Soon after they drop out of college they drop out of life... they come home and want to be treated as young adults but act like irresponsible teens.  They are defeated, depressed, and ashamed... masking their problems by continuing the big party with other young adults struggling with the same issue.

Most struggling young adults present as being depressed, act out in anger, suffer from anxiety, and could be totally detached from the reality of their position. Many enter into unhealthy relationships, begin showing serious problems with drugs or alcohol, or with self-abusive behaviors, including cutting and eating issues. It's not unusual to see these young men and women start and stop their college career two or three times before giving up altogether and slinking home. Their parents are at a loss how to get them jump-started again.

Young adults having these transitional living problems need help understanding and learning how to accept and deal with the responsibilities of being an adult... they are emotionally unable to deal with adulthood. They need to develop life skills; skills that must be present before they can go back out and succeed. For some this may mean starting with an addictions treatment program, then stepping down to a sustained period of supervision and monitored work or community involvement. First things first!  Only after an intervention, along with life and social skill development, can there be a gradual easing back into adulthood or continuing with their education.

For the less severe issues facing struggling young adults parents need to find transtional support for young adults, programs that are designed to engage the young adult in prosocial activities, while at the same time rebuilding his or her self-confidence.  Essentially, they need continued support to mature to the level of understanding to be able to tackle the tough issues of adulthood.  They may need to be able to take responsibility and hold themselves accountable, to follow through with commitments, and to organize their time and budget their money.

Our Family Advocates have located and analyzed a spectrum of successful programs.  We can help you, the parent of a struggling young adult, find the perfect solution for your adult child., We have investigate programs that deal with transitional living, social and life skills development, academic support, and substance abuse counseling.  We have also identified programs that deal with issues associated with late adolescents who have significant academic or social learning differences. This group would include students with language-based learning differences, processing-speed deficits, Asperger's, NLD or autistic spectrum disorders. These particular young adults may need a longer, more gradual transition from home to college; or they may need a life-skills curriculum and a sustained interlude of job coaching or career-skills development before they are ready for independent living.

There is another set of young adult programs that are designed to deal with the emotional and behavioral issues of young adults who are not developmentally prepared for the independent living. These programs range in services, from drug and alcohol treatment with aftercare and monitoring to community-based supportive assisted living.  Some programs offer career guidance and job developemnt support.  Some of the best programs are the wilderness therapy or ranch settings that offer counseling and emotional growth.

Moreover, most of the young adult programs are geared to provide "supportive gap-year" training. Unlike traditional gap-year programs which assume a level of emotional self-sufficiency, behavioral responsibility, and emotional maturity on the part of the willing participant, these more therapeutic gap experiences provide extra supports where appropriate. These programs take into consideration each student's attributes, interests and talents and help them to grow and flurish while building up the missing the living development piece.
