Summer programs serve both boys and girls, and they are considered to be short-term therapeutic programs. Summer camps for troubled kids help teenagers to achieve personal power, build self-confidence, as well as self-esteem. Additionally, summer camps are prosocial, designed to help teens build positive friendships. Camps are designed to help the teen to self-explore and self-express in appropriate ways

Summer camps are everywhere, offering a variety of events, activities, and focuses. But there are only a few summer camps designed for troubled teens. Most therapeutic camps are based in the mountains, with surrounding lakes, offering water sports and aquatic activities such as swimming, canoeing, rafting, and the likes. Additionally, these therapeutic programs are usually a great deal of fun but mixed with good therapy (individual and group therapy) and leadership opportunities. Camping, hiking, horseback riding, signing (around the campfire) are typical experiences.  Some programs offer academics as well.
